Thursday May 16, Châlons/Reims will be at the Palio de Boulazac for the quarter-final first leg of the Pro B play-offs. The Champenois finished sixth in the regular phase after their defeat in Rouen (75-68), Friday May 10, for this last day. Thomas Andrieux’s men were in contact at the break (33-33), before giving in in the last quarter.

Rouen ranks fifth and will face Orléans, fourth. Antibes will not be there. The Azuréens therefore beat the BBD, but if Poitiers lost at Évreux (76-64), the Alliance Alsace dominated Denain (89-90) and took eighth place with the particular difference. The Alsatians will face La Rochelle, the leader. The Maritimes lost to Pau/Lacq/Orthez (65-52), which finished seventh and will face Vichy, the runner-up.

It was therefore with a defeat that Boulazac concluded his regular season: the record stood at 22 victories and 12 losses.

On the floor of the AzurArena, the BBD took two minutes to open the scoring, in a match which took a little time to really get going. Jean-Marc Pansa scored the first four points for his team, remembering Antibes to whom he still owes a year of contract. Green and Boyer pulled the Azuréens (10-9, 6th) but the ball circulated well in the Périgord ranks. Clément Cavallo, Youri Golitin and especially Vincent Amsellem accumulated the points (12-16, 7th).

A wasted advance

Boulazac retained this slim gap at the end of the first quarter (16-19). Two good defensive interventions from Paul Billong were not really rewarded, before good control of the defensive rebound allowed the Périgourdins to break away a little more (16-25, 14th).

But it’s about the BBD… A little haste in attack, like this alley oop missed by Pansa, or lost balls, coupled with a sudden clumsiness and Antibes reduced the margin (26-27, 19th). Palo equalized on shots: 27-27 at the break.

Boulazac had missed an opportunity and the Antibes took advantage of it to take control of the match. Perrin scored five points in a row (32-27, 23rd). The Périgord attack faltered before Hugo Robineau made his mark from afar and then penetrated (35-32, 24th).

The match came alive, Golitin struck from afar (39-37, 26th). To hold on, the BBD increased its defensive intensity and systematically put two defenders on the ball carrier in the back line. But the lost balls in attack didn’t really help. The Mediterraneans were a little too clumsy but took advantage of Boulazac’s errors to increase their advantage for good (44-37, 30th).

The Sharks’ lead was not called into question by Boulazacois who were uninspired offensively, and who very quickly accumulated mistakes in the last quarter (49-40, 34th). Cavallo’s three points had the merit of existing but the Boulazac offensives most often ended badly. And until the final buzzer, despite a performance from Perigord, the Azuréens clung to their hope of the play-offs. Finally gone, unlike that of the BBD.
