“Even today we have two possibilities: win or lose”, says ‘o Mae’ to his judo students before a competition and they reply in chorus: “Winning”. Because the master taught him that it is always possible to choose and change destiny, even when it appears already written and marked by organized crime.

We are in Scampia in the gym Gianni Maddaloniteacher and technical director of the Star Judo Club company which inspired the Rai Kids series «Clan – Choose your destiny», in 10 episodes of 25 minutes, which will debut exclusively on Thursday 23 May on RaiPlay on the occasion of Legality Day.
As has happened in reality since the end of the 80s, in the episodes of this teen drama we see the maestro Gianni Maddaloni, played by Antonio Milo (Brigadier Maione from the series on Inspector Ricciardi), help many kids to escape from the condition of marginality in which they live by teaching them judo, discipline, friendship and respect for others.
The series, produced by Massimo Bruno for KidsMe and Andrea Leone and Antonella di Martino for Mosaicon Film, is based on the book ‘O Mae’. History of judo and the Camorra by Luigi Garlando and has as its protagonist Francesco, known as ‘o Vesuvio (Maikol De Falco), a fifteen-year-old born and raised among the Vele with a fugitive father, an absent mother and an older brother already sucked into the Camorra.
Like him, many kids from the Maddaloni Clan find themselves at a crossroads and have to choose between good and evil and many of them work hard to change their destiny, among these is Ginevra, the warrior, played by Elisa Del Genio Ginevranow seventeen, already Lenù in “My Brilliant Friend” when she was 10.
«I met Maddaloni in Sydney when his son Pino won gold in Judo. He struck me, he presented himself as the anti-Gomorrah”, explains Luigi Garlando, “and he tried to shine the spotlight on the real Scampia, the one of good. In these disadvantaged suburbs there is no lack of talent, but the possibility of cultivating it. At that moment I decided to join the Clan.”
«This series was created with the intention of broadening the enjoyment of young audiences», claims the director of RaiPlay Elena Capparelli: «Over 45% of the 25 million subscribers are under 35 and in recent months there has been an increase among the audience between 14 and 25». For the director of Rai Kids Luca Milano it is «a serious, unsweetened story, which addresses the problems and shows some tools to solve them, for example sport», the same concept repeated by Gianni Maddaloni in his message to the press: «I am speaking to you from Scampia, one of the suburbs most degraded in Italy”, says ‘o Mae’: “What happened to Falcone, Borsellino, Dalla Chiesa, Don Diana must not happen again and to ensure that this does not happen we must educate young people about legality starting from primary school . A formidable tool for doing this is sport.”
Also in the cast are Gabriele Rizzoli (Devois), Francesco Ferrante (Omero), Luca Ambrosino (Ninja), Giorgia Agata (la guappetella), Jacopo Piscicelli (el pibe de Scampia), Alessandro Manna (the artist), Francesco Borragine (‘o Squalo), Giuliana Esposito (Chantal).
The soundtrack is composed of Diego Guarnieri. The songs are written and performed by emerging artists from the Newpolitan scene Gyuse, Shar, Tauri, Terso, Rayo, Dauria, with the production of Ennio Mirra. The album also contains the opening theme of the series «’E guagliun d”o Clan!» written and performed by Gyuse and Shar.
