Athletics: Tom Reux beats his discus record and will participate in the Olympic Games

The French pitchers are definitely in good shape. After javelin specialist Teuraiterai Tupaia, it is Tom Reux’s turn to reach the Olympic minimums in discus throwing. The Breton achieved a throw of 67.91 m at the Fort-de-France meeting (Martinique), i.e. 71 cm more than the standards required to qualify for the Olympic Games. He also qualified for the European Championships in Rome in June.

“It’s incredible, I don’t even believe it yet,” Reux declared into the speaker’s microphone after his feat. I’ve been training for this for years, I’ve had the Olympics in mind since I started athletics, almost. I’m on cloud nine. » With this throw, Reux largely beat his personal best, by more than six meters, and established the second best performance in France: only Jean-Claude Retel, with a throw of 68.90 m in 2002, has already done better .

The double French champion in the category (2021 and 2023) will now look forward to the Games. Even if his performance “only” constitutes the 15th best throw of the season, it would still have allowed him to win the silver medal in Tokyo in 2021 or in Tokyo in 2016. His preparation for the Games will go through Rome, where he will not be the only Frenchman: with a throw of 66.33 m, Lolassonn Djouhan (qualified for the Tokyo Olympics) also reached the European minimums.
