A question is posed to all new BJJ practitioners. How do I choose a jjb kimono? What are the selection criteria for maximum performance and perfect comfort?
1. Cut the kimono
There are several types of court of kimono, each one adapted to different preferences and morphologies:
- Classic fit: A loose, comfortable fit, ideal for beginners or those who prefer maximum freedom of movement.
- Slim fit: More fitted, this cut is usually preferred by competitors because it is more difficult for opponents to grab.
- Feminine cut: Adapted to female morphologies, this cut offers a more comfortable and tailored fit.
Choosing the right cut of kimono is essential, depending on your level and how you intend to use it. If you’re beginnerThe most important thing at first is to feel comfortable and control your body and your movements. As a beginner, you will compete less and will be there mainly to learn techniques and improve your skills.
As competitor, the requirements are different. During competitions, it is always preferable to wear a very light, tight-fitting kimono. Weight is important in the weigh-in, which is carried out with the kimono, and the fact that it is close to the body makes it difficult for the opponent to grip.
Our Jiu Jitsu in Kimono Yokai has a cut that is very suitable for competitors, tight to the body and light, so you will have an advantage over them in the competition.

- A1: For people around 1m60 and about 55-60kg
- A2: For people around 1m70 and about 65-70kg
- A3: For people around 1m80 and about 75-80kg
- A4: For people around 1m90 and about 85kg

The weight of a kimono is important and varies depending on your practice. If you are a beginner, you can start with a heavier kimono, to get used to fighting in a kimono. But when moving into the competition phase, jiujitsukas prefer the lightest kimonos possible.
During the competitions, which are organized by weight categories, the wrestlers are weighed in their kimono and belt. The goal is for the kimono to be as light as possible so that you can carry it easily.
Here are the approximate weights of jjb kimonos:
- Very light (200-350 g/m²): Perfect for summer and competitions, it offers great mobility but may be less durable.
- Ligero (350-450 g/m²): Good balance between durability and comfort, suitable for regular use.
- Medium (450-550 g/m2): The average weight of a basic jjb kimono, neither too heavy nor too light, ideal for training and getting started in jjb.
- Pesada (550+ g/m²): Very durable and resistant, ideal for intensive training, but can be hot and restrictive.
