Former Bundesliga player Jean-Kasongo Banza has died. He died last Friday at the age of 49. According to the online medium “Digitalcongo.net”, Banza succumbed to a “serious illness”. No further details are known.
The Congolese celebrated his footballing breakthrough at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso, when he was part of a sensational comeback against the hosts in the match for third place. Congo managed to equalize a 1:4 deficit and then win the match on penalties. Banza contributed a goal.
A year later, the striker moved to VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, where he made eleven appearances and scored two goals in one season. This was followed by a one-year loan to MSV Duisburg in the second division. He made eight appearances for Meiderich, but did not manage to score a single goal.
Banza later returned to Tunisia to play for CS Sfaxien, from where Wolfsburg had once brought him to Germany. After another stint in Tunisia, he ended his career in 2003.
