Winter Games 2030 and 2034 probably in France and USA

The French Alps and Salt Lake City have moved closer to being chosen as Olympic hosts for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games. The top management of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended on Wednesday to the General Assembly that the two applicants be awarded the contract. The IOC Executive Board thus agreed with the selection committee’s proposal at the start of its three-day meeting in Lausanne.

The IOC session will now make its decision on July 24, shortly before the Summer Games in Paris. However, it is considered a formality that France will host the Games in 2030 and the US candidate Salt Lake City four years later. Both were named preferred candidates for the 2030 and 2034 Games in November 2023. As part of the new award procedure, the targeted dialogue has been taking place only with these candidates since then.

After visiting both regions, the selection committee recently praised the applicants’ plans and the high level of support from politicians, business and the public. In addition, both candidates already have Olympic experience. In France, Winter Games were held in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968) and Albertville (1992), and Salt Lake City was the host in 2002.

France would host an Olympic spectacle again just six years after Paris. It would be similar in the USA, where Salt Lake City would follow six years after the Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
