About a month ago, sad news shook the sports world: former NBA player Darius Morris died unexpectedly at the age of 33. Until now, it was not known why the former basketball player had to die at such a young age. E! News now has the coroner’s file that explains the cause of his death. It states that Darius (33) died of coronary artery atherosclerosis – also known as coronary heart disease. In some cases, this disease can lead to life-threatening consequences such as heart attacks, cardiac arrhythmias or heart failure.

But the heart disease is not the only reason for his death. Other significant factors that contributed to the former NBA player’s death were the effects of cocaine, alcohol and hydrocodone. The latter is an opioid that is normally used to treat severe chronic pain. The coroner classified his cause of death as an accident.

Darius was considered an exceptional talent during his time as a professional basketball player. Between 2009 and 2011 he played for the University of Michigan and excelled with outstanding performances: he was one of only five players in the history of the university to record more than 200 assists in a season. In 2011 Darius then went to the Los Angeles Lakers. In the following years of his career he played for the Philadelphia 76ers, the LA Clippers and the Memphis Grizzlies.
