Genoa’s ‘Caruggiadi’: A Unique Olympic Experience in the Historic Center

The ‘Caruggiadi’ are arriving, the Olympics in Genoese style, an event included within the Caruggi plan, which will take place for four consecutive weekends starting from 21-22 September, until the weekend of 12-13 October. The squares of the historic center will be transformed into stages where outdoor sports can be practiced, such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, but also recreational activities such as tug of war or sack racing.

The declared objective is to combine the promotion of sport with the valorisation of the territory, in the year in which Genoa is the capital of Sport. “The ‘Caruggiadi’ arrive in the year of the Paris Olympics – comments a GenovaToday the sports councilor Alessandra Bianchi – and they are the opportunity to increase our city’s vocation to the common good, through sport.

Local promotion bodies, federations and associations will be involved as part of a very ambitious project, which has received an important contribution of 140 thousand euros from the Carige Foundation. “Carige is always careful to give back to the territory by promoting aggregative social activities, and this project goes in this direction. The contribution will serve to guarantee safety, equipment, staff, a dedicated info point and signage”, explains Bianchi again who underlines the urban planning purposes of the event, linked to sport and territorial planning. “Among the objectives to be achieved are ‘sport’ and ‘tactical’ urbanism”, i.e. the identification of new places in the center in which to practice sports.

The Caruggiadi, open to children of all ages, adults and disabled people, will take place in five squares of the historic center every weekend. “We chose areas that are less consolidated from a tourist point of view, places that suffer from social marginalization”, explains Bianchi. Therefore the events will take place, among others, in Piazza Durazzo, in Piazza Don Gallo, in Piazza del Campo and in Piazza della Posta Vecchia. Alongside sports in the square, other traveling activities such as parkour and orienteering will be held.

“All this without forgetting the peculiarities of the area, including the food and wine ones. Let’s remember that the historic center has the largest number of historic shops that will certainly be involved in the event”, concludes the councilor.
