Valentina Ryser (WTA 236) made a statement in the first qualifying round for Wimbledon. The 23-year-old from Thun defeated Martina Capurra Taborda (WTA 161) from Argentina 6:2, 7:6 and is now one round further in the qualifying round. Simona Waltert (WTA 227) also reached the second qualifying round. Despite struggling at the beginning of the match, she won against the American Clervie Ngounoue (WTA 384) 2:6, 6:4, 7:5.
Céline Naef (WTA 173), however, was eliminated. The 19-year-old from Switzerland lost to Katarina Zavatska (WTA 200) from Ukraine 2:6, 4:6. Jil Teichmann (WTA 197) was also eliminated by a Ukrainian. She lost to Daria Snigur (WTA 131) 5:7, 0:6. (bind)
