Back at the highest level. Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) starts his sixth Tour in a row in Florence. One that will mainly focus on bringing carpentry to its old level. “I get the chance to choose my rides if things turn out well.”
In his brand new Visma-Lease a Bike outfit, Wout van Aert shone in Florence, at the start of his sixth consecutive Tour de France.
Will the city of the Renaissance also see a bit of a rebirth of the unlucky Van Aert and Vingegaard?
“It is certainly our ambition to get back on track here and forget about an unlucky year. There are still many races to be won, starting with this Tour,” it sounds ambitious.
“Of course it’s not easy to just sweep everything away. I think we’ll start with doubts.”
Van Aert is also guessing about his own form. “Normally you gain confidence in races beforehand or at least in the spring. I am in the best possible shape. We have to wait and see how that will go in the race.”
I get the chance to pick my rides if it goes well.
Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)
“There are a lot of rides that should potentially suit me. If my legs tell me that it will be too difficult, I will try to help the team. If it goes well and I improve in the coming days, I hope to be able to choose my rides. I will also get the chance to do that.”
Is there already talk of dosing towards the Olympic Games? “I have been in my chair long enough not to think about dosing now. I want to get back to my old level as quickly as possible,” Van Aert concludes.
