State Farm Stadium in Glendale: Hosting Copa América Matches and More

With capacity for 63,400 spectators, the State Farm Stadium, de Glendale, It is the house of the Arizona Cardinals of American football that will host three matches of the Copa América.

The first of them will be played this Friday with the Colombia-Costa Rica from Group D of the tournament ‘soccer’ which these days has monopolized the NFL sporting stages.

The others will be the Mexico-Ecuador for the third and final matchday of Group B, on June 30; and a quarter-final match, on July 6, between the team that finishes top of Group D and the second of Group C.

Inaugurated on August 1, 2006, it cost approximately 455 million dollars, and was first named Cardinals Stadium.

It is worth noting that State Farm is the first stadium in the United States with a retractable roof and a mobile natural playing field to make it multifunctional and expand its seating capacity to 73,000.

Its mobile playing field has no divisions and for this it has a tray more than one meter deep with dimensions of 71 meters by 122, which rests on 13 rails where the field is transported out or into the stadium in just over one hour.

It was renamed in September 2006 as the stadium of the University of Phoenix which acquired the rights to its name for a 20-year agreement. However, in 2018 he was changed to the State Farm insurance company for an 18-year contract.

This stadium has hosted three editions of the Super Bowl, those of 2008, 2015 and 2023. And it had already hosted other football events such as the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2009, 2015 and 2019, and the Copa América Centenario in 2016.

Like almost all stadiums in the United States, and due to the high temperatures of the Arizona desert, it is fully air-conditioned and has become the center of cultural and sporting events in Glendale.

Its façade is very striking. It has a coating of metal panels that look like mirrors and reflect the sun’s rays, and which in turn help dissipate heat for attendees inside the stadium.
