The hope of participating in the Olympic adventure has been rekindled for Lucas Corvée. According to the newspaper L’Équipethe Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) asked the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to re-establish the pair formed by the badminton player from Alençon and Ronan Labar.
Emotional Elevator
In mid-April, Lucas Corvée and his partner first secured their qualification in men’s doubles in badminton for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Before experiencing, a few days later, an improbable turnaround: the BWF corrected the qualification ranking, after having made an error in the distribution of points, finally granting the place allocated to the French delegation to the pair composed of the Popov brothers.
A terrible disappointment for Lucas Corvée and Ronan Labar, suddenly deprived of the Olympic Games. Since then, they have begun a perilous fight to obtain a wild card and take part in this major event.
After having faced multiple refusals from the BWF, the two teammates took the dispute to the courts by appealing to the CAS, the highest sporting court.
“A first victory for us”
The latter studied the case on Monday, July 8, and ruled in favor of the players by ordering, according to L’Équipe, the International Badminton Federation to recommend to the IOC their qualification for the Olympic Games, in the form of an exemption. “The CAS clearly indicated that the BWF had the obligation to request our presence in the doubles tournament. This is a first victory for us,” Ronan Labar told the sports daily. “Until now, the BWF refused to modify its table, which is 16 qualified teams.”

Lucas Corvée and Ronan Labar should soon find out their fate: the tables for the Olympic competition are due to be published on Friday, July 12.
Usually, the tournament consists of four groups of four teams for the first phase. “Here, we would be moving towards three groups of four and one group of five teams, including us,” added Ronan Labar, still with our colleagues at L’Équipe.
