Whether climbing, table tennis, judo, wheelchair basketball or football: the schools in the district of Kassel are well positioned when it comes to sports – and just as successful. The district, together with Volksbank Kassel Göttingen, has now honored the school sports teams that qualified for the state finals of Youth Trains for the Olympics and the Paralympics.
The results are impressive, as 188 students from 22 teams from a total of eight district schools were able to celebrate receiving medals for their sporting achievements. Two teams even qualified for the national finals: the wrestlers (boys, Year IV; 10 to 13 years) from the Walter Lübcke School in Wolfhagen and the mixed swimming team (Year III; 12 to 15 years and Year II; 14 to 17 years) from the Käthe Kollwitz School in Hofgeismar.
“It is a great pleasure to see what great young athletes are at home in our district,” said Vice District Administrator and School Commissioner Silke Engler, looking at the results. And she continued: “Sport is not only good for the body and soul, it also strengthens the sense of community and conveys important values such as fairness and commitment.”
Wolfgang Osse, CEO of Volksbank Kassel Göttingen, adds: “Youth trains for the Olympics gives students the chance to recognize and develop their sporting talent. Ultimately, it is also about developing a love of sport, performance and competition.”
The surprise guest Stephan Leyhe, ski jumper and two-time Olympic medalist, also provided a real motivational boost for the students. Together with the former professional swimmer and Olympian Annika Mehlhorn from Kassel, who is now Vice President of Competitive Sports at the State Sports Association of Hesse, the Volkmarser presented the participation medals.
