Oyarzabal’s team welcomed their friend in style in Eibar. Flares and music to congratulate the man who scored Spain’s winning goal against England. A goal that earned Spain the fourth European Championship in the history of Spanish football.
“Congratulations Mikel txapeldun,” read the banner that presided over the street where the Real Sociedad player’s hairdresser’s shop was located. In the images, Oyarzabal can be seen leaving the establishment amidst a deafening noise caused by his friends who were dancing and singing to the rhythm of ‘Potra salvaje’.
Around thirty young people stood behind the banner and lit their flares to begin paying tribute to their friend. “Mikel, Mikel, Mikel Oyarzabal!” they shouted. The footballer approached them and they wrapped the banner around him while they bounced to the rhythm of ‘Potra salvaje’.
A welcome worthy of a European champion, which, curiously, took place in front of the EH Bildu headquarters in Eibar. The leader of the pro-sovereignty coalition, Arnaldo Otegi, had already made it clear that he was not going to support the Spanish national team despite the large representation of Basque players in its ranks and regretted that these footballers “do not have the option of playing for the Basque national team because the Spanish State denies it to us.”
The party organised by Oyarzabal’s gang in Eibar is a far cry from what happened a few days ago in Elorrio, the home town of the footballer’s mother. Unidentified people painted graffiti in the town square against the Spanish national team players Mikel Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino and placed a banner with the slogan “No to the assimilation of the Spanish national team”. Under their names, graffiti could be read calling them “traitors” in Basque along with a crossed-out swastika.
