David de Gea Eyes Serie A Comeback with Genoa After Year-Long Hiatus

David de Gea is open to a Serie A adventure with Genoa, transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio reported on Friday. The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been without a club for over a year after leaving Manchester United. Genoa will decide in the coming days whether to offer De Gea a contract.

It has been 419 days since De Gea last played for Manchester United, when he went down to Manchester City in the FA Cup final. He briefly considered retirement.

However, five months after leaving United, De Gea realised he missed football. He stayed in Manchester for tax reasons and went into training on the recommendation of Richard Hartis, whom he knew from his time at United.

People who have been in close contact with him during that process say he is working seriously on a return to top-level football, as The Athletic outlined last week. A new opportunity now seems to be presenting itself in Italy.

Genoa are looking for a new first keeper, now that Josep Martínez has been sold to Inter for over 13 million euros. Coach Alberto Gilardino will decide this weekend whether he wants to sign De Gea. The 45-times international of Spain is in any case keen to get started in the Serie A.

De Gea played a total of 545 games for United, winning the FA Cup, Europa League and Premier League with the club. In his final season, he won the Premier League Golden Glove for Best Goalkeeper for the second time. De Gea kept a clean sheet 190 times.

De Gea’s contract with United expired last summer. Both parties spent months negotiating a new contract, but no agreement was reached. This ended a twelve-year marriage. Although De Gea has not played in goal for a year, Transfermarkt still estimates his market value at 5 million euros.
