Close Call for Judo Star Lubjana Piovesana: Controversial Loss Leaves Door Open for Bronze Medal

She was soooo close! Our judo lady Lubjana Piovesana (27) had her hand on the silver medal in the decisive pool fight, but lost in extra time after a controversial referee decision. But the British-born woman still has a chance of a medal!

“I watched the whole thing on the screen, it was very close,” Piovesana told ORF after losing the fight in extra time (“Golden Score”) against Mexican Prisca Awiti Alcaraz, who also comes from England.

Coming into the competition from the extended circle of medal contenders, Piovesana first prevailed against Esmigul Kujulowa from Kazakhstan in the category up to 63 kg with Waza-ari and then defeated her former British teammate Lucy Renshall in the Golden Score with Ippon. She lost to Awiti Alcaraz, who also comes from England, in the Golden Score with Waza-ari.

On Tuesday at 4 p.m., Piovesana, who moved to Vorarlberg to be with her partner and has been training in Lochau since then, will be fighting for bronze in the repechage round. “Lulu,” as she is called by her friends, is taking it easy: “It’s a great experience that I’m having right now. I’m happy that I’m competing for Austria.”
