Belgium’s Olympic Hopefuls: Key Matches and Performances for Today’s Events

8u30: Badminton: Lianne Tan

After a day of rest, badminton player Lianne Tan is back in action. In her second and final group match, she will face Thase Ratchanok, the number 21 in the world. Tan herself is ranked 55th in the world and lost her first match against the silver medalist from Tokyo. If Tan wants to stay in Paris for a while, she better win her match, because only the group winner advances.

10u06: Judo: Matthias Casse

Will Matthias Casse deliver Belgium a second gold medal today? Our compatriot is still the number one in the world in the -81 kg class and won two Grand Slams this year. After his bronze medal in Tokyo, Casse now wants the highest: the Olympic title. To do so, he must pass his eternal rival Tato Grigalashvili, whom he will only meet in the final. In the first round, Casse must pass Sibghatullah Arab, a 21-year-old Afghan who is part of the refugee team.

10h10: Rowing: Tim Brys

He was the first Belgian to come into action on Saturday and did not disappoint. Tim Brys came into action last weekend in the skiff (solo) for the heavyweights. Our 31-year-old compatriot rowed himself to the quarter finals with a third place. His time of 6’52”35 would have been enough for victory in other series. Brys indicated before the Games that he was aiming for the top ten, an ambition that is still realistic.

11:00: Equestrian dressage: Domien Michiels, Larissa Pauluis and Flore De Winne

In equestrian sports, eventing is making way for dressage. Our country is also sending three riders in this discipline: Domien Michiels, Larissa Pauluis and Flore De Winne. In contrast to the eventing team, competing for medals is not realistic for the dressage team. A place in the top eight may be the goal.

12:00: Tennis: Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen

It took quite a while before our Belgian doubles duo could take action at the tennis tournament. Saturday became Sunday and Sunday became Monday. But yesterday evening it was finally time for Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen. And they did not disappoint. They easily won in two sets against the French eighth seeds. Less than 24 hours later, however, they have to take the court again. Our compatriots will face the retiring Andy Murray Daniel Evans.

12:05: Sailing: Isaura Maenhaut and Anouk Geurts

The Olympic sailing tournament is now on day three. The Belgian sailors did an excellent job yesterday in the 49er FX class and moved up from eighteenth to eighth place. This puts Isaura Maenhaut and Anouk Geurts on course for the medal race, which is reserved for the top ten at the end of the twelve regular regattas.

2:35 PM: Sailing: Yannick Lefebvre and Jan Heuninck

The Belgian men in the 49er FX class fared less well. Yannick Lefebvre and Jan Heuninck dropped back to fifteenth place after the second day. With a seventh place in the fifth regatta, the duo did end on a positive note. It is up to them to continue that line today.

19u45: Hockey: Red Lions

With victories against Ireland and New Zealand, the Belgian hockey men still have a perfect report in the group stage. The results are there, but a good level of play is not quite there yet. Today it has to be better, because with Australia the number three of the world awaits. The match is a re-edition of the Olympic final of Tokyo 2021.

Triathlon postponed to Wednesday: Jelle Geens and Marten Van Riel

Normally, triathletes Jelle Geens and Marten Van Riel would also be in action on Tuesday at 8:00, but in the early morning it was announced that the individual triathlon for men would be postponed by one day due to the poor water quality of the Seine. The competition is now scheduled for Wednesday at 10:45, after the individual triathlon for women. The organizers emphasize that additional water samples will have to show whether the competitions can actually take place on Wednesday. “A reserve day is still provided on August 2,” it says.
