Update with Macedo’s defeat

Brazilian Rafael Macedo fell just short of a medal in the -90kg judo category at the 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday, losing to Frenchman Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou in the bronze medal fight.

In front of a crowd devoted to his rival, Macedo received a third warning shortly before regulation time, giving the bronze to the home team despite having had two consecutive chances to win in the last minute of the fight.

The 29-year-old Brazilian, who won silver at the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games, advanced to the medal fight after beating his South Korean rival Juyeop Han, 25, with an ippon in the repechage.

Brazil already has two medals in judo at these Olympic Games: Willian Lima’s silver in the -66kg category and Larissa Pimenta’s bronze (-52kg).
