Viktor Axelsen’s Victory Sparks Joy and Growth in Danish Badminton Community

Annette Balle from Sakskøbing Badminton Club ended up sitting with tears in her eyes when Viktor Axelsen gave his winner’s interview.

On Monday afternoon, many Danes were glued to the screen when the Danish badminton star played the final match against Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

In two sets, the Dane outplayed his opponent, and the fantastic result created joy among badminton fans around the South Seas.

– It’s great to get our sport out there. It doesn’t always affect the number of members, but the joy and interest in the sport grows, says Annette Balle from Sakskøbing Badminton and Tennis Club.

Really good advertising

Also in Nykøbing, the chairman of Nykøbing F. Badminton Club, Jesper Nielsen, is excited about the result. And he believes that Viktor Axelsen is a “really good advertisement and figurehead for the sport of badminton.”

Monday’s result is nothing less than superb, he believes. A wild performance in which the Olympic winner did not drop a single set.

Next week there is a start-up at the club, and Jesper Nielsen believes that the gold medal for Viktor Axelsen will rub off on the club, that “a peak will happen,” as he says. It has also happened in the past when the badminton player has delivered great results.

But NBK has other things to celebrate this year than the gold medal, as the club’s hall celebrates its 90th birthday later this year.

Ridiculously high level

Kenneth Belling, who is a coach and clubman at Nakskov Badminton Club, calls Viktor Axelsen’s level “ridiculously high.”

Time and time again he has performed as we saw on Monday.

– It’s so crazy that he can find that level, so it was just a matter of sitting back and enjoying it, he says.

Although Kenneth Belling was reasonably sure that Viktor Axelsen would probably win, he did not think it would happen so easily.

Conversely, he thought that Viktor Axelsen “should fight a little more for it,” as he says.

But Kenneth Belling does not think the victory will have much significance for the number of members in the club.

– I think I have some players who look forward to playing badminton even more. But I don’t think it makes a big difference in relation to members. This is about the good club environment. It is much more about how good we are at getting new people into the club, says Kenneth Belling.

And in Nakskov, getting new members is going “excellent”.

– In recent years, we have had full teams, and there are plenty of young people who want to play. We work with everything around us to create good experiences. You don’t have to win the Olympics, but it has to be fun to get better, says the coach.
