Viktor Axelsen writes another chapter in Danish sports history and repeats the feat from 2021 in Tokyo, and travels from Paris with the second gold medal of his career in his luggage after a show of power in the final against the reigning world champion.
Things were set in the oven for a bang of an Olympic men’s singles final on Monday afternoon in the French capital. The two combatants who had to compete for the gold are two of the biggest names in the sport. Viktor Axelsen is the defending gold medalist from the Games in Tokyo in 2021, while Kunlavut Vitidsarn is the reigning world champion from the WC in Copenhagen last year. The two superstars have met seven times before today’s match, and of the seven encounters, Viktor Axelsen has won six of them, including the WC final in 2022.

The victory at the world championships in Japan two years ago had to be repeated today if Viktor Axelsen were to defend his Olympic title from 2021 today. Vitidsarn set out sensibly, but the unprovoked mistakes suddenly lined up for the Thai world champion, and Axelsen took advantage of that , who started his poisonous offensive against stay in the first set, where the Danish Olympic gold medalist led 11-5. Axelsen held on to the upper hand and the great offense and pulled away towards the end of the set, which he won 21-11. Momentum followed Axelsen in the second set, and the Thai world champion did not seem to have any solutions to the great Danish game. Axelsen led 11-3. Vitidsarn seemed broken after the stay and a well-played Viktor Axelsen left no doubt. After a formidable performance at another Olympics, winning without dropping so much as a set, Viktor Axelsen is Olympic champion. He closes the second set with the numbers 21-11.
Viktor Axelsen further writes himself into the history books by being only the second men’s singles player to win two Olympic gold medals. In addition, he is the most winning men’s singles at the Olympics measured in carats with his two gold medals and a bronze.
