German 3×3 basketball players sensationally win gold

The German 3×3 basketball team has won gold. The quartet of Svenja Brunckhorst, Sonja Greinacher, Elisa Mevius and Marie Reichert defeated Spain in the final 17:16. This gave them the first German Olympic medal in basketball.

Many viewers were outraged when ZDF stopped broadcasting the semi-finals of the German 3×3 women’s basketball team a few seconds before the end. Advertisements were then shown, and finally the “heute” news program. The broadcaster is now talking about “a mistake.”

ZDF regrets its decision to stop broadcasting the Olympic semifinals of the 3×3 women’s basketball team just seconds before the end. “Due to the explosive global political situation, the 7 p.m. ‘heute’ broadcast should be broadcast at the usual time if possible. However, stopping the broadcast shortly before the end of the semifinal match between the German 3×3 women’s basketball team and Canada was a mistake,” said ZDF sports director Yorck Polus.

On Monday, the public broadcaster switched to advertising in the linear program just 25 seconds before the end of the exciting match against Canada, before the “today” news began. This triggered some sharp criticism from viewers on social networks. A number of viewers were annoyed that they had not been able to get to a live stream in time to see the end of the match.

ZDF viewers miss German basket for victory

“We regret that the viewers in the main program missed the last basket that would have won the German basketball team and put them in the final,” said Polus. The German team with Svenja Brunckhorst, Sonja Greinacher, Elisa Mevius and Marie Reichert won the match against Canada 16:15, with Greinacher scoring the winning goal shortly before the end.

“We showed the gold medal final later in the evening in full live on TV,” added Polus. In the final, the German Basketball Association’s selection beat Spain 17:16 in front of the eyes of icon Dirk Nowitzki. It is the first medal for the DBB at the Olympic Games.

“I haven’t realized it yet. It will take a few more weeks. Germany has a gold medal in the 3×3 – that’s unbelievable,” said Greinacher, who won both the semi-final against Canada (16:15) and the final against Spain (17:16) with her last-minute throws. The team led by Brunckhorst and Greinacher celebrated qualifying in May like a medal – and now, two and a half months later, they are actually Olympic champions.
