Joosje Burg is obviously tough. The hockey player was involved in a scene in the Netherlands’ 3-0 win against Argentina in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games that is painful to watch. The 27-year-old striker collapsed on the field in the second quarter after being hit in the face by a ball from Argentinian Agustina Gorzelany.

After the goal, Burg fell to the ground with a heavily bleeding face, whereupon the Dutch national team’s medical team immediately rushed onto the field to treat the visibly shocked player. After a two-minute break, Burg was initially escorted off the field with the help of two physiotherapists. But the game was not over for the injured player.

After halftime, Burg returned with a tampon in her nose and a plaster on her face to keep the bleeding somewhat under control. Shortly afterwards, however, she had to leave the field again for good. In order to be able to play again, Burg had to change her blood-stained jersey. The coaches stuck her jersey number onto the spare jersey with strips of adhesive tape.

Despite the injury, Burg celebrated her entry into the final with her teammates, but left the hockey park in Colombes after the game in an ambulance. “She will be examined,” explained national coach Paul van Ass. afterwards. “After that we will see what the options are.”

Why did Burg continue playing?

Van Ass also commented on the fact that Burg returned to the field at all after the serious hit: “The doctors said she should try again, but she couldn’t get any air through the tampon.” The Dutch national coach also stressed the caution that is necessary with head injuries: “I’m not a doctor, but you have to be very careful with heads. The ball went right between her eyes,” said Van Ass. “But Joosje played brilliantly. You go into a tournament to achieve everything.” They will see whether Burg can be used again.

Burg’s teammate Frédérique Matla expressed concern about the striker’s health: “She is a very close friend of mine. I don’t know if she can play in the final, but I hope so.”
