On Wednesday, September 4th, the LuxFilmLab invites you to the political thriller “Tatami” at 8 p.m. at the Ciné Utopia. The film is directed by Zar Amir Ebrahimi, known for her award-winning role in “Les Nuits de Mashhad” (Cannes 2022), and Guy Nattiv, Oscar winner for his short film “Skin” (2018). “Tatami” celebrated its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it was awarded the Brian Prize, which honors films that promote freedom of expression, human rights and democracy.

The film tells the story of Iranian judoka Leila, played by Arienne Mandi, and her coach Maryam, played by Zar Amir Ebrahimi. But during the competition, Leila is forced by the Islamic Republic to fake an injury and intentionally lose. Leila’s freedom and that of her family are at stake as she faces a difficult decision: should she give in to the pressure and fake the injury as Maryam demands of her, or should she keep fighting and try to win gold?
