Against All Odds: Prisca Awiti Reflects on Her Journey to Olympic Silver in Judo

Prisca Awiti, the Mexican silver medal winner at Paris 2024, spoke at a press conference after returning to Mexico at the end of her participation in the Olympic Games.

Awiti confessed that she is aware that the medal she managed to win was not something that was expected in Mexico or the rest of the world, but she revealed that judo is a sport in which it depends on how the athlete performs on the day of the competition.

“It is something I am aware of, my medal was not intended for Mexico or the world, but judo is a beautiful sport because it depends on how the athlete performs on the day of the competition.”

Similarly, Prisca added that what happened to her is something that teaches people that you don’t have to be the favorite to win a medal, if you believe in yourself and your preparation it is possible to win.

The Jewish woman explained that she has gradually become accustomed to what it means to be an Olympic medalist after speaking to the media and being recognized on the street.

“Little by little I am getting used to what it means to be a Mexican medalist. It is not something I am used to and I have had to learn many things, talk to the media, have people in front of me. Now people recognize me in the street, my life has changed a lot.”

Finally, she said she will take a break to begin preparing for the next competitions and with the goal of exchanging silver for gold in Los Angeles in 2028.

“It is important to rest in order to recharge and think about the next goal, which is to turn this silver into gold. I like to set goals because you only dream when you sleep, goals are something fixed.”
