Olympic Games: German canoeists win silver in kayak foursome

The German canoeists won silver in the kayak four at the Olympic Games in Paris. In the final over 500 meters, Paulina Paszek, Jule Hake, Pauline Jagsch and Sarah Brüßler were only narrowly defeated by the New Zealanders. At the finish they were only 0.42 seconds away from the first Olympic victory by a German women’s quartet in this discipline since 2008 in Beijing.

The women had already won silver in the four-man kayak event in 2012 in London and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. In the Paris race they were in the lead for a while, but the New Zealanders countered and overtook them. Bronze went to Hungary.

New Zealand finished with a time of 1:32.20 minutes, with Germany just behind with 1:32.62. Hungary then came in with a time of 1:32.93. Poland came in fourth, followed by Spain and China.

Shortly after the women’s race, the men won gold in the four-man kayak. Peter Kretschmer and Tim Hecker had previously missed out on a medal in the two-man canoe. The duo from Leipzig and Berlin had to settle for fifth place. China secured the Olympic victory.
