Contentious Pass Allocation at National Bank Open Sparks Debate Among Tennis Officials

The allocation of passes for the National Bank Open in Montreal and Toronto is clearly causing a stir, particularly among Richard Legendre, a man who is very well placed to understand the current context.

On TVA Sports on Friday, the former director of the Montreal tournament and Tennis Canada questioned the national federation’s decisions on the matter. It forced a younger player like Alexis Galarneau to play in qualifying to reach the main draw, which he was unable to do. Meanwhile, veterans Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil were given a direct ticket; however, the former withdrew before even playing his first match, while the latter retired after three games of his match against Sebastian Korda.

“I think there is a collective post mortem to be done on the part of Tennis Canada,” he said. […] In this one, there is the attribution of wild cards. It’s major: you give a pass to a player to arrive directly in the final table with the purses and points that this entails.”

According to him, the organization should focus more on the future when it comes to granting these privileges.

“For me, it has to be an investment in the future and not a reward for the past,” Legendre continued. “I understand the services rendered by Milos and Vasek; they are enormous. But with where we are in the development of Canadian tennis, I think we can still take care of the future a little bit, rather than just rejoice in the past.”

“That’s why I think that performance on the field, ranking and age are important elements in the allocation of these passes. And yes, I think Alexis Galarneau deserved one.”
