No surprises in the first 4 games of the 32nd round of the Coppa Italia: Genoa, Monza, Udinese and Sassuolo respected the home field advantage and reached the round of 16. Genoa beat Reggiana 1-0, Monza defeated Sudtirol 9-8 on penalties, Udinese overwhelmed Avellino 4-0 while Sassuolo beat Cittadella 2-1.
Genoa thanks Messias and dreams of the derby
Genoa, supported by over 20 thousand fans, tried in every way to take the lead in the first half with Thorsby (3 times) Vitinha (2 occasions), Messias, Frendrup and Bani, without however overcoming the Emilian defence supported by the young goalkeeper Edoardo Motta, born in 2005 and trained at Juventus, making his debut with Reggiana. In the second half, after more opportunities for Vitinha and Messias, the winning goal came (65′) thanks to an invention by Malinosvkyi who had just come on, who was good at freeing Messias alone in front of Motta: a lob and a goal that was worth the qualification. In the final minutes, Reggiana almost equalised with Vido who in the 90th minute tested Leali with a header. Genoa closed the match with the attacking duo of Ekhator and Fini, both born in 2006 and products of the rossoblù youth system, with Gilardino who had 6 Primavera players on the bench. The rossoblù could have the derby with Sampdoria in the next round if the blucerchiati manage to beat Como on Sunday evening (8.45pm) at the Ferraris.
Monza defeats Sudtirol only on penalties
Monza suffered against a solid Sudtirol: they did not go beyond 0-0 in the 90th minute and needed the ninth series of penalties to make Alessandro Nesta happy, in his first official role on the Brianza bench. The decisive save on Praszelik by Semuel Pizzignacco, recently taken on loan from Feralpisalò, thus allowing Izzo to close the very long series from the spot at the 18th shot. In the next round Monza will face the winner of Venezia-Brescia, scheduled for Sunday.
Thauvin Show, Poker for Udinese against Avellino
All easy for Udinese against Avellino, led by former player Michele Pazienza. On the day of Kosta Runjaic’s official debut on the bench, the Friulians broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute with Brenner who closed a triangle in the area with Thauvin and anticipated Iannarilli with a clever touch. A few moments later Lucca hit the crossbar with a header from a few steps away. In the second half (50′) the doubling of the score by captain Thauvin with a penalty awarded for a handball discovered after a VAR review. The third goal came in the 58th minute: Brenner intercepted the ball in midfield and set Thauvin in action on the counterattack: the Frenchman moved in from the right and produced a perfect assist for Lucca, who scored on the fly. In the 88th minute, the poker arrived: a splendid assist from substitute Samardzic for Davis who with a delightful lob went over the goalkeeper who was desperately coming out at the edge of the area. In the next round, Udinese will face the winner of Salernitana-Spezia, scheduled for Monday at 20:45.
Laurienté gives qualification to Sassuolo
Sassuolo did not make any mistakes in their first outing of the season at the Mapei Stadium. Mulattieri broke the deadlock against Cittadella in the 45th minute, taking advantage of a pass from Bajrami. Cittadella did not give up and equalized in the 48th minute with a long-range shot from Baldini, who took advantage of a lost ball by the black-green defense. After just 10 minutes, however, Sassuolo found the qualifying goal thanks to Laurienté, who, served by Boloca, scored with a right-footed shot from outside the area. Sassuolo will now face the winner of the match between Lecce and Mantova.
