Ronald Koeman discussed the cancellation for the upcoming international match during Monday afternoon’s press conference. The PSV midfielder is missing from the Dutch national team’s Nations League matches against Hungary and Germany because he is tired.
Players like Schouten, Wout Weghorst and Frenkie de Jong are not part of the international selection. “Of the three, Jerdy is an example of someone who was through it. Because of the European Championships, then he became a father and played many matches in which he was not fresh and fit. He indicated that and we discussed it. In the end I decided not to call him up,” says the national coach.

“Do you find that difficult?” asks Jeroen Stekelenburg NOS wonders. “For me, Schouten is a player who knows very well what he wants and can indicate things well. If you are not physically able to come, there is no point in coming,” Koeman answers. “Do you think that’s a good reason not to be there for once? Because you have previously been strict with players who gave a certain reason,” Stekelenburg responds. “I know Schouten and that is no reason for me to think differently about it,” the national coach concludes the subject.
‘Frenkie’s return is still far away’
Koeman also discussed a potential return of De Jong, who has been playing for FC Barcelona for a long time. “I have spoken to Frenkie on the phone, but – with all due respect – he is still a long way away. He found it very exciting and difficult to return to action at Barcelona. He played ten minutes last weekend, but he still needs to play a bit to get into rhythm.
