Remco Evenepoel will play a few more times in Italy in these last weeks of the season. The big goal is the Tour of Lombardy next Saturday, but things don’t seem to be going really smoothly anymore.

Not at his best
Evenepoel had a particularly difficult time in both the Giro Dell’Emilia and the Coppa Bernocchi. “He is far from top. We see that too,” sports director Klaas Lodewijck is downright honest about the current form of the time trial world champion. So there is some doubt.
“When Remco is really at his best, he also perseveres and makes a difference. But you clearly notice that he is near the limit. Not if he just cycles, at a steady pace. With full effort. It is now important to recover well and see what can emerge in the coming days,” said Lodewijck.
Evenepoel itself also makes no bones about it. “I also feel that my batteries are gradually running out,” he said after the Coppa Bernocchi. Unlike Emilia, he finished that race, but finished in an anonymous 53rd place.
Cancellation or forfeit?
The Tre Valli Varesine is still on the menu on Tuesday… if that match even takes place. There are rumors from Italy that the match would be canceled due to bad weather and too much precipitation. In any case, Remco is considering not starting in those inclement weather conditions.
“Mmm, we should check it out. And first talk to Remco,” says Lodewijck. “Ask how he feels and tailor that to what threatens to present itself on Tuesday. If it is really bad, we can still take our precautions. But until further notice, we will stick to the original plan.”
