Everything ready for an exciting day in Major League Baseball (MLB) in which New York Yankees face Kansas City Royals during Game 3 of the Division Series in the American League this Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium, a venue that hosts its first postseason game in the last nine years since the 2015 World Series.
The Bronx Bombers and Royals move their playoff commitment to Kansas City after having split wins during the first two games of the series in New York, so a victory tonight puts the winner on the cusp of a new Championship Series.
How do the Yankees and Royals get to the game?
The best-of-five American League Division Series has now been reduced to a best-of-three contest, thanks to Kansas City’s 4-2 victory in Game 2 on Monday. While that sent the Royals on a happy flight home, the Yankees aren’t ready to give up after posting an American League-best 94 wins during the regular season.
“That’s what we’ve been showing all year,” Juan Soto said. “I think we can do it at any time. I think as a team we’ve been doing that since day one. I have confidence in my guys coming behind me and in front of me, our starting rotation, our bullpen, everyone. “We know what we have.”
Clarke Schmidt will be making his first career postseason start (fourth appearance) after pitching to a 5-5 record and 2.85 ERA over 16 starts this season with the Yankees. Schmidt’s season was cut short by injury, but he returned in early September and pitched to a 3.65 ERA in his final five starts. Schmidt did not face the Royals this season.
Seth Lugo takes the ball in Game 3 for the Royals and will look to emulate his first postseason start in the Wild Card Series, when he allowed one run in 4.1 innings against Baltimore. Lugo had a 3.00 ERA in the regular season. He only allowed four runs in 14 innings this year in two starts against the Yankees.
