The international chess tournament for prisoners has started / Article

The head of the International Chess Federation, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, said that chess players in Latvian prisons have shown enormous progress in three years:

“I’m glad they’re paying attention fair play or the rules of fair play. This is one of the things that we want to teach with the chess program in addition to everything else that chess has proven –

in a world where there are programs like that, the depression rate, the aggression rate, the recidivism rate goes down among those prisoners who play chess.

They become cooler, more meaningful while in prison. But I think it’s even more special when they get out of prison. Even then, they are better prepared for real life.”

Tuesday was the first day of the tournament, which will continue until October 10.
