England 1-2 Greece
Buts : Bellingham (87e) for the Three Lions // Pavlidis (49e90e+4) for the Greeks
No record for Carsley.
The Greeks, surprising leaders of their group on goal difference before kick-off, managed to snatch their first victory against a top 5 team in 20 years, at the end of regulation time (1-2).
Pavlídis as a hero
The first half proved to be balanced, and neither team managed to gain the upper hand over the other, nor to appear truly dangerous, even if the Three Lions had possession.
The Greeks, more enterprising and fairer, ended up finding the fault at the start of the second half. While England had not yet conceded a single goal during the first two days of the Nations League, Vangélis Pavlídis, the Benfica striker, came to deceive the vigilance of Jordan Pickford after a solitary rush where he reviewed the the entire English defense (0-1, 49e). Georgios Masouras even briefly thought he had scored the break goal, before the assistant referee raised his flag to signal Pavlídis’ offside (59e). Same scenario and second goal refused to Pavlídis (83e). Situations which were important since at the end of the game, Jude Bellingham came to tie the two teams with a supersonic strike (1-1, 87e). But the Greeks continued to move forward and the providential man of the evening, the inevitable Pavlídis, came to score the goal of chaos at the end of added time (1-2, 90e+4). The Greeks thus offer themselves a prestigious victory and remain undefeated since the start of the competition.
The victory was dedicated to George Baldock, a Greek international who tragically died on Wednesday.
