Steering wheel, smiles and medal
“It’s heavy,” exclaims one of the children holding the athlete’s gold medal. The Nantes resident showed his precious to the dozen children while narrating his journey and “his revenge on life”. “The children are spontaneous, without filters, I like it,” says the one who is originally from Sautron.
During this event, the Paralympic champion is accompanied by volunteers of the Premiers de Cordée associationdont Alexis Boubekeure.
“I am passionate about sport, basketball in particular, and I have always wanted to volunteer,” says the young man. “As a volunteer, I want to bring joy and life and see children smile,” he adds.
Quickly, the third floor corridor of the children’s hospital serves as a badminton court. Charles Noakes plays with the children, shares a moment with each one, especially Kadi, lying on her bed. “I wanted to bring them joy, make them want to fight illness,” says Charles.
In addition to exchanging shuttlecocks with the children, the Nantes resident plays with the caregivers. A few photos were also taken to immortalize the moment.
“These activities give me energy”
“Usually, there are not so many people,” smiles Mélodie, 13. Indeed, between the media, caregivers and volunteers, the third floor quickly becomes cramped.
The teenager was Charles Noakes’ teammate for one game. “It was good, we were able to work as a team. It would have been better to play in a real room,” says the one who played badminton at Vertou.
A great experience for Mélodie whose daily life is often punctuated by medical appointments. “These activities give me energy”confides the young sick girl.
“These actions are close to my heart, because I have personally worked with the hospital world. I know that everyday life is not always beautiful for patients and caregivers”adds Charles Noakes.
After sharing a game with the Paralympic champion, the children left with a diploma, signed by the gold medalist.
The apprentices were all smiling after dropping the racket, to the great pleasure of Charles Noakes. “These are magical moments for them and for us athletes too. If they are happy, I am happy. »
