Tennis: Leylah Fernandez in the doubles final four in Wuhan; Gabriela Dabrowski eliminated

Quebecer Leylah Fernandez and Indonesian Aldila Sutjiadi reached the semi-finals in women’s doubles on Friday at the Wuhan Open.

The duo defeated second-seeded Australian Ellen Perez and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez 6-4, 6-4.

Fernandez and Sutjiadi won 72.5% of rallies with their first serve and had four breaks in 11 opportunities during the match which lasted one hour 19 minutes. They also erased 11 of the 13 break points they faced.

Fernandez and Sutjiadi will now face Americans Jessica Pegula and Asia Muhammad.

Fernandez lost in the round of 16 in singles, defeated 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 by China’s Zheng Qinwen.

In another women’s doubles match, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her New Zealand partner Erin Routliffe, favorites, lost 6-4, 6-3 to Kazakh Anna Danilina and Russian Irina Khromacheva.

Dabrowski and Routliffe won only 59% of the points with their first serve and recorded only one break on four occasions. Their opponents managed four breaks.
