Austria’s two highest leagues of the fastest ball sport in the world are back in the starting blocks. The basic round of the 24/25 season for the 1st and 2nd Badminton Bundesliga starts this weekend. The new counting method is intended to shorten the duration of the game and also provide more surprises. Starting this season, a game is over as soon as a team has won three sets. A set is not played to 21 points as before but to 11 points. What is also new is that at least 3 Austrians must be used per game.
After last season’s withdrawal from BSC 70 Linz, Sportunion Ohlsdorf remains first class. New to the 1st Bundesliga is last year’s 2nd Bundesliga champion WAT Simmering, who wants to shake up the league with interesting newcomers and legionnaires. For many people, the “league newcomers” are difficult to assess and believe they can come up with a few surprises. As an indicator, the Viennese host the reigning state champions from Pressbaum on the first match day. One day before, Saturday October 12th, 2024, the Mödlinger team traveled to Ohlsdorf. Badminton Mödling is currently in a phase of change, but is still ambitious for the upcoming season. Sportunion Ohlsdorf wants to take advantage of their second chance in the top division after the emotional rollercoaster ride of last season. After a joint training camp and sufficient regeneration, the team is aiming for its first win in the 1st Bundesliga. The third match of the 1st round will take place on Sunday between UBSC Wolfurt and ASKÖ Traun. While the runner-up from Upper Austria wants to play for the title again with an unchanged squad, the big goal for Vorarlberg is: staying in the league and, if possible, play-off. With a Vorarlberg regular team and selective changes, Wolfurt sees itself well prepared for the upcoming season.
Statements from the clubs before the first matchday in the 1st Bundesliga:
Sports Union Ohlsdorf (Michael Schausberger):
Next Saturday, October 12th The new season begins for our Bundesliga team. At the start, a very strong opponent awaits our players in the first home game, BC Mödling. Our team is very motivated and is already looking forward to this first encounter. There was a lot of training in the summer and so we are waiting for an initial assessment of the situation. Of course we are outsiders again this year, but our team is already used to this role. All Ohlsdorfers have the opportunity to get the new club uniform. Of course, we hope that there will be a lot of fans who will loudly cheer on our team.
Badminton Mödling (Michael Tomic):
We are looking forward to the start of the season next Saturday. We start with an away match against the team from Ohlsdorf. After we missed the finals last year and therefore didn’t achieve our goal, we added a few players to our team after the disappointing season. We are a little more reserved when it comes to setting goals for the season because, on the one hand, the newcomer from Simmering has strengthened itself with a few legionnaires and will therefore be another serious opponent in the fight for the upper playoff. In addition, the new counting system could cause a few surprises and it remains to be seen how the teams will cope with it. Nevertheless, we trust in our mix of now experienced homegrown players and the new additions and are looking forward to an exciting and hopefully successful season!
UBSC Wolfurt (Michael Vonmetz):
After the excellent 3rd place last season, our team will welcome the title contenders from Traun on Sunday in Dornbirn/VBV Halle at 11:00. We expect the new season with some innovations. In order to make the games more entertaining, three sets won are played to 11 points. Our team is also coming up with some changes. With Mohammad Iqbal, Anja and Lena Rumpold, we were able to sign strong and talented newcomers. Together with our tried and tested team, we will once again bring a powerful and balanced team to the start. Our goal is to have nothing to do with relegation and to reach the play-off if possible. In the game on Sunday against Traun, which features Olympian Collins Filimon, we will do everything we can to keep the match open for as long as possible.
ASKÖ Traun (Herbert Koch):
Contrary to last season’s goal of finishing the regular season in first place, this year’s strategy is aimed at achieving a top four place. This means that we don’t always have to aim for maximum results in the preliminary rounds due to the points regulations (8:0 and 7:1 bring 4 points). The focus for our top players this year is primarily on improving their world ranking positions in the individual competitions. In the end, of course, we want to be in contention for the title again. From today’s perspective, the team, which has remained unchanged from the previous season, definitely has the potential to win the 15th championship title in the club’s history.
ASV Pressbaum (Andreas Meinke):
At the start of the new season we meet the newcomer from Vienna, who has strengthened themselves for the new season with some foreign players. We are therefore looking forward to the first encounter with excitement, but expect to be able to take a few points away from Vienna. We are looking forward to the fact that we can probably compete with the entire team and that Andraz Krapez will be playing for ASV Pressbaum for the first time. As defending champions, we hope for a successful start to the season so that we can play the first game in front of our own audience in Pressbaum in mid-November.
WAT Simmering (Martin Kober):
As a newcomer from the 2nd Bundesliga, WAT Simmering goes into the first round against defending champion Pressbaum without any pressure. This encounter will show us what is possible this season. We hope there will be a large number of spectators in Mollardgasse because the quality that will be on offer – both from the opponent and from us – is rarely seen in Austrian badminton sport.
