THE AFRICAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE (BAL) is recruiting for this position (October 11, 2024)

The League African Basketball is a basketball club competition in Africa launched in 2020 with the support of FIBA ​​and the NBA. The BAL replaces the FIBA ​​Africa Basketball League, the 2019 version of the African Cup of Basketball Champion Clubs.

Job Summary

This position will report to the BAL League Operations Manager and provide operational, programmatic and administrative support for matters related to BAL basketball operations (ranging from player transactions to enforcement of game rules ). The ideal candidate will bring some experience or exposure to basketball or sports operations, strong communication and project management skills.

  • Direct all basketball operational activities related to the BAL women’s program.
  • Lead BAL basketball programs such as coaching clinics, referee clinics, professional camps, African Coaches Program and any other programs assigned.
  • Manage the department’s tracking activities, including the development and management of a database system.
  • Assist in the administration and execution of BAL basketball and game operations, including venue, player, team and referee matters.
  • Help lead the orientation of BAL players and teams on the rules and regulations of the BAL league.
  • Assist in planning training sessions and shooting sessions, and supervise training field preparation.
  • In coordination with BAL teams and internal stakeholders, help develop the BAL calendar.
  • In partnership with the host team, assist in the coordination of BAL team travel, including transportation arrangements, accommodation and meals, player and team visa matters.
  • Support the design of leadership workshops to help teams build capacity.
  • Interpret player disciplines and rules to ensure team and player compliance with all BAL agreements, rules and contracts.
  • Help establish and maintain good working relationships with FIBA ​​and the federations.
  • Support off-season basketball activities and events as needed.
  • Provide support for all CSR activities, as required.

Required skills/knowledge

  • Excellent verbal, written, communication and presentation skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of the basketball landscape is preferred.
  • Global thinker and doer – recognizing and knowledgeable about other cultures and business practices.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • Fluency in English required, French, Arabic or Portuguese a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multinational matrix organization and manage complex projects.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout Africa.

Experience required

  • At least 5 years of experience or exposure to basketball or sports operations (playing, coaching, talent evaluation, programming, etc.)
  • High level basketball playing experience (college or professional) preferred.
  • Experience organizing basketball practices, clinics and camps is a plus.
