About twenty Romanian and Albanian workers working on the Camp Nou remodeling works were involved in a pitched battle with sticks at noon this Friday that left six slightly injured. Those involved are employees of a subcontracted company who sleep in hotels in the town of Calella and the authorities are investigating whether their residence permits are legal and they can work in Spain.
The Mossos d’Esquadra have had to appear at the Camp Nou to intervene after being notified of the fight between workers, who have been fired by the person in charge of the works at the Barcelona stadium. The security of the Camp Nou works is in the hands of a private company hired by Limak, the Turkish multinational construction company that is carrying out the Camp Nou remodeling work.
This is not the first time that incidents have occurred during the construction of the Barça stadium, since on May 23 several workers were also involved in another brawl. On that occasion, the workers injured during the fight outside the Barça stadium were treated by the Medical Emergency System (SEM).
Barcelona plans to finish the work on the Camp Nou in December, although as the work is progressing it is not expected that the new stadium can be inaugurated until at least March. Around 1,750 workers are working on the Camp Nou works, at a cost of at least 1,450 million euros.
