For more than ten years, the celebrated singer has been the only voice heard at the penultimate game of each week during the NFL season.
As “I’ve Been Waiting All Day for Sunday Night” resonates in homes across America, Underwood’s influence on the atmosphere of what is often the best game of the weekend is undeniable.
On Thursday, a tweet from the well-known NFL social media account, ML Football, went viral, claiming that Underwood receives a million dollars every week his ballad plays on SNF. This adds up to a total of 18 million dollars for the promotional video he makes at the beginning of the season.
They defend the singer
The publication was quickly denied by a tweet from user Molly Vegas, who shared a fragment of an interview Underwood gave on “The Howard Stern Show” in May 2023.
In the fragment, the singer shows confusion and denies the figure of 18 million dollars in response to a question from Stern.
-For me? “No,” Underwood responded. Hopefully! It would be great, it would be fantastic.
Underwood was first asked to sing SNF’s opening song in 2006, right after winning the fourth season of “American Idol.” As the winner of the show, her career quickly took off, producing millions in album sales, winning Grammy Awards, and performing before hundreds of thousands of fans.
However, she turned down the offer because of how busy she was, according to an interview with Yahoo. Pink took on the role for one season before Faith Hill held it for six years, eventually leaving the role.
It was in 2013 when the network offered Underwood the role again, and this time she accepted. The 41-year-old singer has been on the job for 12 seasons, with her most recent campaign beginning with the SNF opener between the Rams and Lions on September 8.
