“Cēsis“/”Cēsu PSS” and “Ods” of Liepāja were drawn in the first pair, “Ķekava” and “Rīga Stradiņa University”/”VEF Rīga” (RSU/”VEF Rīga”) in the second, “Salaspils Sports School”/ “API Mobile”, fourth – Gulbene “Buki”/BJSS, both entering the second round without a fight, fifth – “Sigulda”/”Elvi” and “Limbaži”, sixth – basketball school “Ogre” and Daugavpils Sports School, seventh – ” Saldus” and “Rīgas Juniori” and in the eighth – “Jēkabpils BA” and “Tukums”/TSS.
LIBL units, as well as NBL champion “Jelgava” will participate in the round of 16 tournament. Eight pairs will compete in one game on the court of the lower ranked team. The games are scheduled for December 6 and 7.
The winners of the first pair of the first round will play with “University of Latvia”, the winners of the second pair – with “Rīgas zeļlias”, “Salaspils Sporta skola”/”API Mobile” – with “Jelgavu”, “Buki” of Gulbene/BJSS with “VEF Rīga”, the winners of the fifth pair – with “Liepāja”, the winners of the sixth pair – with basketball club “Ogre”, the winners of the seventh pair – with “Ventspili”, and the winners of the eighth pair – with “Valmiera Glass”/”Vidzeme University”.
The winners of the first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth pairs will play each other in the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals and semi-finals, the teams will compete in the sum of two games, with the games taking place on the 10th/11th respectively. and 17/18 January, as well as 28/29 January and 4/5 February.
The final game is scheduled for February 15.
The Latvian Cup basketball competition was held for the first time in 1948, when 24 teams participated in the men’s tournament and Riga “Dinamo” won. Until 1994, 40 tournaments were held, and only nine times the cup was won by the team that won the Latvian championship that year.
The Latvian Cup competition for men’s teams resumed in 2021 after a 27-year break.
Last season, “VEF Rīga” triumphed in the Latvian Cup for the third year in a row, beating “Rīgas Zeļlius” 94:69 in the final.
