The Glarner Tennis Club takes back the team trophy at the Glärnisch Cup

The historic tournament in a reduced setting

There was no shortage of participants at the 53rd edition of the Glärnisch Cup. Only the weather was able to shake up the match lineups for the three days of competition. The tournament management under Domenico Mongiovi and Sandro Rossini brilliantly managed to postpone the games for Friday at the last second and move the entire tournament Saturday to the hall in Kaltbrunn. Although some categories were shortened, almost a hundred players were ultimately able to compete. Including quite a few participants from the top categories R1 and R2. The youngest participant among the women was 14-year-old Isabel Maquieira, who fought her way to the final among the women. The youngest participant in the entire tournament was 11-year-old Elliot Knecht, a junior from the Glarus Tennis Club.

The team victory belongs to the Glarus Tennis Club

This year, the host Glarus Tennis Club brought the challenge cup for the team competition back to Ennenda. The victories of Laurin Trümpi in the men’s R7/R9 and Charlotte Freund in the women’s R7/R9 laid an important foundation for the total number of games won, which were credited to the Glarner Tennis Club’s account. Laurin prevailed in the final against club colleague Tim Hauri and Charlotte won her final game against Isabel Maquieira.

In the men’s premier category R1/R4, Nicola Wehrle won against Kevin Wild after two sets and a champion tie-break. In the men’s R4/R7 category, Robin Sutter won against Marco Lo Presti 6:4 and 6:4. Afra Violetti won the top women’s R4/R7 category with a clear win against Barbara Steinbacher. In the men’s 65+ category, Martin Gloor won the category against Daniel Müller. In the Champions tie-break, the remaining men’s 70+ category was decided between Peter Heller and TC-Schwanden player Andrea Lienhard, with the latter winning the category.

Audiences, guests and participants were provided with home-baked cakes, warm meals and drinks at all facilities. Ultimately, the 53rd edition of the historic tournament became a sociable and exciting tennis event – another successful chapter in the history of the Glärnisch Cup.
