After the severe <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2024/10/live-video-of-hurricane-miltons-arrival-in-florida/" title="Live video of Hurricane Milton's arrival in Florida“>Hurricane Milton, many people returned to destroyed homes. A family from Orlando decided against this fate.

Orlando – Hurricane “Milton” hit Florida and caused severe damage in many places. Millions of people had previously been called upon to leave their homes and seek safety, including a former presenter from Germany. But a family from Orlando didn’t want to leave their home unprotected – and resorted to an extraordinary method: They simply tied up their house!

For more protection from Hurricane Milton: Family ties up their home with conveyor belts

CNN reporter Brian Abel visited the family before “Milton” hit Florida. In a video published on YouTube, family father Pedro and his daughter show how he went about his mission. Six wide conveyor belts were pulled across the roof and held in place with hooks on both sides of the house. As the daughter explains, the hooks reach almost two and a half meters deep into the ground and were attached with cement.

The conveyor belts were ultimately intended to prevent Hurricane Milton from taking the roof away. The idea came about around 20 years ago, when the family still lived in Puerto Rico and had already had experience with severe storms.

And actually: In a video that the daughter published after the storm, she walks around the undamaged house. However, she emphasizes that the entire neighborhood was not as badly devastated as other areas. It therefore remains unclear whether the tapes would have offered protection even in extreme cases.

In the comments under both videos, numerous people expressed their respect for the family. While the idea may seem bizarre at first, it shows the family’s strong will and commitment to protecting their home at all costs. A man claimed to also be from Puerto Rico and to know the method from there.

“It never went wrong,” the man writes. “We did it in a wooden house we had, and it was the only one that survived (Hurricane) ‘Hugo’ and ‘George.'” According to him, the idea was not funny, but livelihood. People from Puerto Rico in particular knew how devastating the hurricanes were back then. (nz)
