Lack of snow has buried a large ski resort in the Alps. It closes for good

Councilors announced the closure of the ski area, located at an altitude of 1,368 meters, this week. The effort to collect money for operation was not successful, reports the Independent server. “Matheysine Council has decided to close Alpe du Grand Serre on Friday as it can no longer finance the operation on its own. It is a human, social and economic trauma for the villages,” said representatives of the municipalities.

According to CNN, 47 members of the Matheysine Regional Council voted to close the center, while 12 wanted to keep it open. At the same time, the resort launched collections, one for corporate and one for public donors, which were supposed to at least partially solve the financial burden. “These donations will help reduce community costs and hopefully help us open the center for the next two seasons,” the council previously said.

There is resentment among locals over the closure of the resort, which Alpe du Grand Serre Tomorrow says will result in the loss of at least 200 jobs, which they say is cruel and inhumane.

Resorts are facing a crisis

The Independent reports that Alpe du Grand Serre is the largest resort in the northern Alps to be forced to close ahead of the start of the ski season. However, this is not the first area in lower and middle locations that was forced to do something like this due to the influence of warmer winters and decreasing snow.

The International Ski and Snowboard Association (FIS), in conjunction with the United Nations, warns that ski resorts around the world face an existential threat due to the climate crisis. Last year, 26 World Cups were canceled due to poor snow conditions, and the association is worried about the future of winter sports.
