After Manuel Neuer‘s resignation from the national team and Marc-André ter Stegen‘s serious injury, it is suddenly unclear again who will be number one in the DFB team – at least for the next year.
As soon as national coach Julian Nagelsmann announced the squad, it was clear which two goalkeepers would have the best chance: Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel and Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann.
The 28-year-old VfB goalie made his senior national team debut in the 2-1 away win against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Baumann (34) will also make his DFB debut during this international break. On Monday he will play against the Netherlands (LIVE ticker >>>) for the first time, even though he has been part of the national team for four years.
Nübel “can be the solution for years”
But which of the two is the most suitable number one in the long term? Former DFB goalkeepers Olvier Kahn (86 international matches) and Rene Adler (12 international matches) commented on this. The latter sees Nübel ahead “due to age,” because “if ter Stegen doesn’t return, Nübel could be the solution for years.”
Bayern legend Kahn doesn’t want to commit himself, but believes the premier class is Nübel’s trump card: “Unlike Oliver Baumann, he has the chance to prove himself at international level in the Champions League. That’s an advantage.”
