Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced a tougher approach in the fight against illegal migration. Even the right to asylum could be temporarily suspended, he said at a meeting of his party. The Polish head of government apparently no longer wants to adhere to EU rules if they contradict Poland’s interests.

“I will be tough and ruthless”

Donald Tusk literally explained to supporters in Warsaw:

“I’m really going to be absolutely tough and ruthless here, even if I get beaten for it, when it comes to illegal migration, when it comes to only respecting the European laws on migration that support our security. We will not respect or implement European, EU ideas if we are sure that they harm our security. “I’m talking about the migration pact.”

The Polish government – together with Hungary – had already spoken out against the EU’s migration pact.

The liberal-conservative Tusk declared that he wanted to regain complete control over migration to Poland. He has previously blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for organizing illegal immigration. Tusk also had a wall built on the border with neighboring Belarus.
