Brazil has not been the superpower in world football as it used to be for many years. The country is licking its wounds and the national team is no longer inspiring. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva came out with a very striking message.
President sharp for Divine Canaries
“I have been advocating for some time that the Brazilian team should include players who play in the country. You should give the players here a chance, not the guests from abroad,” he told Brazilian media.
That is a strong and strange language. He went even further. “I was sitting on the bench watching the match and I knew the goalkeeper (Ederson, ed.), the Paris Saint-Germain defender (Marquinhos, ed.), Rodrygo and Raphinha, who I recognized by his haircut. The rest “I didn’t know that. That is simply not possible. And that ensures that the boys who play here in the Brazilian league do not get a chance in the national team,” he noted.
No more Romarios
He also said that he had already communicated this to the president of the Brazilian Football Federation. “There are no Garrinchas or Romários playing abroad at the moment. Those who play abroad now are really no better than the players who play here.”
Sports and politics have been mixed up far too much for years.
