MUSCAT: Saudi player Rayan al Mukhaimer clinched the men’s singles at U-15 category in the West Asia Junior Badminton Championship following his defeat against Syrian player Mohammed al Rafai by 2-0 at the indoor courts of Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Saturday.
Syrian player Mayas al Qabbani managed to earn a 2-0 win over her team-mate Leen Shakerdi to snatch the women’s singles at U-15 category after tough tie.
The championship, which was hosted by Oman and organised through Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC) in collaboration with the Asia Badminton, came to an end on Saturday after six days of thrilling competitions. The event featured participation of 58 players representing eight West Asian countries including: Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syria and the hosts Sultanate of Oman.

The medals and trophies were distributed by Eng Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb, Deputy Chairman of the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, in presence of Dr Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Daroushi, Chairman of Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC). With the conclusion of all the finals, West Asia Junior Badminton Championship came to an end after six days of exciting competitions.
The duo comprised of Mohammed al Rafai and Abdul Rahman al Qabbani from Syria defeated Saudi duo Ahmed al Mueed and Rayan al Mukhaimer by 2-0 in a thrilling contest to claim the gold medal and trophy of men’s double event.
In the women’s doubles final, Syrian duo including Mayas al Qabbani and Leen Shakerdi defeated Saudi duo comprised of Batool al Mutairi and Mai al Mutairi by 2-0.
Saudi players continued their domination on the event titles as the duo of Rayan al Mukhaimer and Batool al Mutairi beat Mohammed al Rafai and Mayas al Qabbani by 2-0 to win the mixed doubles event.

Jordan’s Ismail Omar clinched the title of men’s singles at U-17 category following his defeat against Syrian player Shadi al Ansari while Jordan’s Maria Abu Arrah edged Syria’s Jannah Aseela by 2-0 to claim women’s singles event.
The duo of Saudi Arabia comprised from Al Watheq al Obaidi and Abdulaziz al Maqhawi beat Iraq’s duo comprised from Yahya al Humairi and Rami Salah to lift the men’s double title while Jordan’s Maria Abu Arrah and Jannah Aseela beat Saudi’s duo Saba al Harthi and Ghram al Rushedi to win women’s double event. Syrian team comprised from Hussam and Wasan won the mixed double event thanks to their win against Jordan Ismail and Rawan.
At the teams level, Saudi Arabia team emerged champions of U-15 at West Asia Junior Badminton Championship. Syria team managed to earn the title of team level category of U-17 event. The team competitions of the West Asia Junior Badminton Championship concluded recently while the singles event began on Thursday and runs until Saturday. Syria team players managed to clinch the team’s U-17 category title after defeating Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a thrilling final. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia team secured the U-15 title with a close 3-2 victory over Syria in a tough final clash.

Dr Abdulrahim bin Musallam al Daroushi, Chairman of Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC), stated that the tournament achieved numerous organisational and technical successes, receiving widespread praise from officials and various representatives.
“After the formation of ORSC since July 2023, we had managed successfully to host three local open badminton championships in addition to a continental tournament within just one year,” he added.
