Three days after the historic home defeat against Greece, vice-European champions England have rehabilitated themselves. The Three Lions won the Nations League in Finland – again with their captain Harry Kane – 3-1 (1-0) and were at least convincing at times. However, interim coach Lee Carsley‘s team was also a bit lucky as the hosts missed several great chances.
Jack Grealish gave England an early lead after a clever pass from Angel Gomes (18th). After the break, Augsburg’s Fredrik Jensen missed the excellent opportunity to equalize (57′), before Trent Alexander-Arnold made the decision with a free kick from 20 meters into the corner (74′). Declan Rice made it 3-0 (84′), Arttu Hoskonen scored late for the Finns (87′).
Bayern striker Kane, who was rested due to a minor injury in the first ever defeat against Greece (1:2) on Thursday, came away empty-handed in his 101st international match.
The Greeks maintained their lead in the table with a 2-0 (0-0) win against Ireland. With their fourth win in their fourth game, the 2004 European champions again distanced themselves from the favored English team by three points. The goals in Piraeus were scored by captain Anastasios Bakasetas (48th) and substitute Petros Mantalos (90th + 2).
