“Unacceptable”: DFB President condemns national player’s homophobic loss
October 13, 2024, 8:26 p.m
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf noted with surprise the scandal surrounding a homophobic statement made by Wolfsburg professional footballer Kevin Behrens. “Overall, of course, unacceptable,” said Neuendorf during a media round. He followed the incident in the media.
“I read that he apologized afterwards saying that he thinks it was a big mistake. There are no two opinions about that”said Neuendorf. “At least it’s good that he recognized the mistake. I think that will probably play a role in the club again.”
The center forward of the Bundesliga club from Lower Saxony is said to have refused at the end of September to sign a jersey designed in rainbow colors with which VfL wants to set an example for diversity and tolerance. A homophobic statement is said to have been made. A year ago, Behrens played his only international match for the German Football Association in the USA against Mexico.
