Nations League: Germany wins against the Netherlands and is in the quarter-finals

The German national soccer team has in the <a href="https://www.archysport.com/2022/01/dfb-meet-netherlands-in-the-international-match-first-top-opponent-for-flick/" title="DFB meet Netherlands in the international match – first top opponent for Flick”>Nations League against the Netherlands won and thus advances early to the quarter-finals of the Nations League. Jamie Leweling from VfB Stuttgart scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute to make it 1-0 (0-0) in front of 68,367 spectators in the sold-out Munich Arena.

“You have to single him out today, not just because of his goal. He played an outstanding game,” said captain Joshua Kimmich about Leweling’s performance after the game. “We won as a team,” he said.

The goal was preceded by several chances: Lewelig scored in the first half. Following a corner, he shot the ball from the backcourt into the top right corner of the goal. However, after reviewing the video, referee Slavko Vinčić from Slovenia declared the goal invalid. The assist provider Serge Gnabry was previously offside when Kimmich passed the ball.

Germany has ten points in Group A

Shortly afterwards, Maximilian Mittelstädt missed the chance to take the early lead and a few minutes later Leweling missed the next chance with a shot from the penalty spot. Oranje captain Stefan de Vrij cleared in front of the line (28th). The Dutch, however, managed only a few offensives. In the 77th minute, goalkeeper Oliver Baumann narrowly blocked a shot from Leipzig’s Xavi Simons. And also in the 90th minute he saved a Dutch shot from Dortmund’s Donyell Malen.

In Group A3, Germany now has ten points and is therefore one of the two best in the group. In the final group games in November against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary, the German team will now have to secure first place. In the newly introduced knockout round with two legs, the eight best nations will play in March for a place in the final tournament in June.

Before the game started, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer as well as the players Thomas Müller, İlkay Gündoğan and the absent Toni Kroos were greeted with applause from the national team.
