The 10 professional basketball teams play 6 rounds per team during the regular season, a total of 54 games, to determine the 6 teams that will advance to the playoffs.

What is drawing the most attention in the new season is that KBL, which hosts professional basketball, announced that it would apply more relaxed judging standards to prevent minor physical contact from being called a foul and disrupting the flow of the game.

KBL held a rules briefing session last month and announced that it would not call a foul even if there is physical contact in a situation where a player moves left, right or backward following the opposing team’s attacker in a normal defensive position.

As the foul standards have been relaxed, the number of players falling over even with light contact in order to induce a foul by the referee has decreased significantly, and rough physical fights are expected to occur in areas where there is a lot of competition for possession of the ball, such as under the goal.

The standards for U fouls (unsportsmanlike fouls) are also relaxed.

Previously, in a fast break situation, a U foul was declared even if the defender only extended his arm while facing the attacker. When a foul is called, the attacking team gets two free throws and the right to attack.

However, starting from the new season, if a player reaches for the ball held by an opposing player, a general foul will be called. Excessive physical contact, such as attacking an opponent with your body, is still called a U foul.

Along with the relaxation of the judging criteria, the ‘foul challenge’ is introduced.

Each team manager may request video review once for a personal foul called against his team during the fourth quarter or overtime.

Accordingly, the harsh behavior of coaches protesting the referee’s decisions in the match box is expected to decrease.

In terms of competition between teams for the championship, it is expected that Wonju DB, KT, and Changwon LG will challenge the stronghold of last season’s champion KCC.

KCC, which finished the regular season in 5th place last season and went on to win the championship, has winning members including Heo Woong, Choi Jun-yong, Lee Seung-hyun, and Song Kyo-chang.

After naturalized player La Gun-ah, who was responsible for the goal, left the team, Dionte Button, who played for DB in the 2017-2018 season and was selected as the best foreign player, was recruited to prevent the team from weakening its power.

DB, which lost to KCC in the semifinal playoffs despite taking first place in the regular season last season, recruited Chinanu Onuaku, who boasts strong defense under the goal.

If he works well with existing members Kim Jong-gyu and Kang Sang-jae, he will be evaluated as having the strongest power at height. DB finished its warm-up by winning the KBL Cup, which was held as a prelude to the regular season.

Kang Sang-jae did not play in the KBL Cup due to a back injury, but is expected to return in time for the opening of the season.

KT, which was disappointed by losing to KCC in the championship game, retained members from last season, including Heo Hoon, Moon Seong-gon, and Ha Yoon-ki, and new foreign players Rayation Hammonds and Jeremiah Tillman joined.

KT, which also reached the finals of the KBL Cup and faced DB, is worried that key player Heo Hoon is in poor condition after injuring his wrist ahead of the season opening.

The team that changed its team color the most in the new season is LG.

LG, whose strength was solid defense, transformed into an ‘offensive team’ by recruiting shooters Doo Kyung-min and Jeon Seong-hyun.

In the KBL Cup, the two players’ offensive power failed to revive and they were eliminated with two losses in the group stage, but attention is being paid to what kind of power they will show in the regular season.

Meanwhile, the ‘Basketball Youngshin’ game to welcome the new year on the basketball court on December 31st will feature Ulsan Hyundai Mobis and Daegu Korea Gas Corporation, which played last season, moving to Ulsan.

The All-Star Game will be held on January 19, 2025, and the location has not yet been decided.

Due to the 2025 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup qualifying schedule, professional basketball will take a break from November 15 to 26 and February 14 to 25, 2025.
